Roxanne's short list of what's in and what's out when it comes to doing business in the third millennium.

Discussion Points

Intro
Hardly a week goes by that we don't experience a fundamental shift in how business is conducted, or we live our lives. From my vantage point, a huge chunk of these changes can be attributed to the influence of the internet. So I thought I'd start a list of what's in and what's out, especially those items that have been spurred by the internet. Take a look and listen to see which ones already have or will soon be affecting your business.

IN OUT
First Mover Advantage Long term, detailed planning
Candid, immediate communication Rehearsed, vetted "PR" messaging
Doing things because you love them Doing things so long as you get paid
Customer wants to know Customer is always right

Bottom Line Takeaways

  1. We'll be the first to admit it's not easy getting in this new groove. We want to do what we love AND get paid!
  2. We are big advocates of research and testing, of polished delivery and even a formal, professionalism. We're learning though when to drop the perfectionism and just get the job done.
  3. We love candid conversation, and one of our mottos is, "Perfectly reasonable people disagree about everything." There really are many ways to get something done.
  4. We love learning - which makes us a good customer, and we love sharing our knowledge, which makes our customers smart. It's not so much about being right; it's about being smart.

What I got from it is that keeping an awareness of our shared humanity can go a long way to helping each other solve a problem. And this is one of the underlying key operators of the internet - it is making for a much more even playing field and encouraging "peership" as opposed to top down relationships.
